Borgaon is a quaint village about 10 km from the popular hill station Saputara and about 70 kms from Nasik. A decade ago, an enterprising local changed the fates of this small dot on the map to earn popularity as ‘Strawberry village’. You can read more about it here
Rotary club of Nasik every year organises ‘Strawberry festival’ at the Strawberry farms here. The idea is to create awareness about Strawberry cultivation and in return help the farmers with their problems. Experienced agricultural experts interact with the farmers to understand and address their concerns.
This time of the year the weather in and around Nasik is gorgeous-perfect for outdoor picnics. The drive from Nasik to Borgaon is serene ,worth the 1 1/2 hour long drive. Green fields with onion blooms and tomatoes flank the scenic route.
Both kids had a field day (literally 🙂 ), the diva scouting for red- juicy berries and the lad flying kites. The locals helped us to pick up the choicest of fruits. The little girl who does not eat any fruit except banana was seen happily gobbling down her handpicked strawberries.
This is our second year for the strawberry festival and we have had a wonderful experience so far. Leaving behind the hustle & bustle of the city for a day, to experience the quiet, refreshing, unpolluted rural surroundings with strawberry picking as an added bonus, can make anyone fall in love with this place. Kids had a great learning experience connecting with the farmers, knowing where the fruits and local vegetables are grown.
Farm visit or Strawberry picking at Borgaon & the surrounding villages is still a private activity. The farmers have not yet opened their farms to tourists but you can see punnets of strawberries being sold on the road approaching Borgaon.
Apart from munching on them throughout the day we bought a few kilos of the fresh berries. The berries were mostly snacked on by the kids but I managed to try out few quick recipes with them. What I made with the handpicked strawberries from Borgaon? Answer in my next post, stay tuned!
